Coping with the Pressure to Succeed: Mental Wellness in the Diaspora

One significant source of pressure is the expectation to excel, often stemming from the sacrifices made by earlier generations. Many in the diaspora feel obligated to achieve high levels of education, secure well-paying jobs, and attain a certain social status. This can be amplified by the perception that success is the only way to justify the move or to repay the investment made in their upbringing which can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Sometimes peer pressure and comparison, both within the diaspora and in the broader society, can increase this pressure. Also, Social media plays a role here, with curated images of success and achievement constantly on display. This can foster feelings of inadequacy and fuel a sense of never being “good enough.” Additionally, the lack of a strong support system, due to geographical distance from family and friends, can make it harder to cope with these pressures.

To navigate these challenges and promote mental wellness, several strategies can be employed. First, it’s essential to recognise and challenge unrealistic expectations. Seeking professional help from therapists or counsellors who understand the unique challenges of the diaspora can be invaluable. Building a strong support network, either online or in person, can provide a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation. Finally, practising self-care, such as mindfulness, exercise, and engaging in hobbies, can help manage stress and promote overall well-being.
